We've installed Starlink across the Southern Highlands for years now — from hobby farms in Robertson to heritage estates in Bowral, rural properties near Bundanoon, and businesses in Moss Vale. So when people ask us "is Starlink actually worth it?", we give them the honest answer, not the marketing version.
Here it is.
Who Starlink is genuinely great for
If you're in a rural or semi-rural area of the Southern Highlands and your current internet is either non-existent, unreliable, or painfully slow, Starlink is very likely to be a significant upgrade. The Southern Highlands has large pockets of poor NBN coverage — particularly outside the main towns — and mobile data is patchy once you leave the main roads.
Starlink delivers real-world download speeds of 100–300 Mbps to most locations in our area. That's more than enough for video calls, streaming, working from home, and running smart devices — all at the same time. For a rural property that's currently on ADSL or a 4G hotspot, the difference feels extraordinary.
💡 Real example: A client near Exeter was getting 4–6 Mbps on their NBN fixed wireless connection. After we installed Starlink in bypass mode with a UniFi router, they're consistently pulling 180–220 Mbps. Same location, same property — completely different internet.
What Starlink isn't as good at
In the interest of honesty, there are a few things worth knowing before you order:
- It needs a clear view of the sky. Starlink communicates with satellites overhead, so even a single tree branch in the wrong spot can cause dropouts. The Starlink app has an obstruction checker — use it before you decide where to mount the dish. (Or better yet, let us do a site assessment.)
- Latency is higher than NBN fibre. For most people this doesn't matter — you won't notice it on streaming, video calls, or general browsing. Serious online gamers may find it slightly less responsive than a good NBN fibre connection.
- Speeds vary by time of day. Like all internet services, Starlink can be slower during peak periods. In our experience across the Southern Highlands, evening peak is noticeable but still well above what most people were getting before.
- It doesn't support port forwarding. If you need to run a server or remotely access devices on your network directly, the standard Starlink setup doesn't support this out of the box. (We've solved this for clients using dual-WAN setups — ask us about it.)
The installation matters more than people realise
This is the part nobody tells you when you order Starlink online. You can absolutely plug it in yourself — Starlink is designed for self-installation. But a professional installation makes a meaningful difference to performance.
The two biggest factors are dish placement and bypass mode configuration.
Dish placement affects how clear your sky view is. A dish mounted at eave height might look fine but have 15% obstruction from the roofline or nearby trees. On the roof or a pole, that drops to zero. The Starlink app can show you obstruction data, but it takes an experienced eye to know where to mount for the best result on a specific property.
Bypass mode means running your Starlink dish into a proper router instead of the Starlink-supplied router. In our experience, clients in bypass mode with a quality UniFi router consistently see significantly better speeds and reliability than those using the stock setup. We do this on every install as standard.
How much does Starlink cost in the Southern Highlands?
Starlink hardware currently costs around $599 AUD for the standard kit, plus a monthly plan starting from $139/month. Professional installation (roof or pole mounting, cabling, bypass mode setup, router configuration) is an additional cost — contact us for a quote based on your specific property.
Our take: Starlink is genuinely transformative for rural internet in the Southern Highlands. If your current connection is poor, it's almost certainly worth it. The key is having it installed properly — the difference between a self-installed Starlink and a professionally configured one is larger than most people expect.
